Title: An Overview of Dance Stretching
Date: October 7, 2024
Component: Fundamental Principles and Movement Skills.
Goal 1: Acknowledges how to move different body parts.
Competency: B. As the teacher vocally directs movement sequences (run slowly at a high level, leap rapidly, and jump slowly), the student can exhibit two fast and two slow actions as well as three levels of space: low, middle, and high.
Resources:
Cozy mats for stretches on the floor
Visual assistance (images showing various stretches)
Optional: Foam rollers, resistance bands, and tiny balls for hand workouts
Music (instrumental, calming, rhythmic music)
Content:
Overview of Stretching: Describe stretching and its importance for both dancing and general physical well-being. Emphasize how it enhances muscle control, flexibility, and injury avoidance.
Fundamental Stretching Methods: Stretches that target the main muscle groups (arms, legs, and back) should be demonstrated. Stress breathing, bodily awareness, and the value of moving within comfortable bounds.
Action:
The five-minute warm-up:
To warm up your muscles and get ready for stretching, start with simple exercises like arm circles and slow marching in place.
15-minute guided stretching session:
Lead the pupils through a variety of stretches:
Stretch your arms by holding one arm over your chest with the other hand.
Seated Forward Stretch: Extend your legs while sitting on the floor. Pupils can simply extend their arms in front of them or reach for their toes.
Stretch your neck by gently tilting it forward and to either side.
Adapt each stretch to the skills of each individual student. For instance, although some students might be able to perform stretches while standing, others might prefer to do it while seated.
Partner Stretching (five minutes, optional):
Students can practice gentle partner stretches in pairs, like a back-to-back sitting twist or a seated forward stretch while holding hands. Prioritize communication and teamwork.
Five minutes of breathing and cooling down exercises:
To cool down, lead the class in deep breathing techniques and a leisurely stretch. Encourage them to notice any areas where they feel more relaxed or flexible and to experience the results of the stretches they performed.
Evaluation:
Take note of each student's involvement and engagement. Check to see if they comprehend and safely perform the stretches.
Reflection Question: Find out what each student enjoyed about the exercise and how they feel after stretching.
Feedback: Give kids vocal feedback that highlights their strengths and expresses gratitude for their efforts.
