Forum: 9/30/2024 Teaching: Creative Dance Approach

 Natalie, Sofia, Sydney, Peter

Intro:

For our intro, since our students know eachother, we begin by joining in a circle and sharing how they are feelings today or anything they would like to share with the community.

Warm up:

The students spread out into windows formation and do a short, simple guided warm up with the teacher. Since our group includes children with disabilities specifically, it is important that they have someone to follow along with  to ensure everyone is on the same page, feels included, and is properly warmed up to avoid injuries.

Intro to theme:

our theme is inclusion and self expression within community. This is incredibly important for our group because we want to give them outlets to express their feelings and emotions where words may fail them. We also want to give them a safe and welcoming environment where they feel like they can be themselves.

Creation of dance;

students are broken into groups of 3-4 people and work together to create their own dance. Each student contributes by making one move or sequence of moves that represent how they are feeling. each group combines the movements of the students within their group to make one collaborative, inclusive dance.

Cool down:

Students get back into a circle and share one thing they are grateful for. It is important for our students to practice gratitude and mindfullness as part of out hollistic approach to teaching.
